NaBloPoMo – Communications and the Bunnell Key

Well it is NaBloPoMo time again.  Yep a post a day for a month.  Least its just 30 days.  Last year was computers and the previous was cameras.  So this year is communications with a radio emphasis.  If you are going to talk communications,  you have to start with the telegraph.  So first up is the possibly the oldest bit in my collection.

A J. H. Bunnell Telegraph key.  This one is actually a Western Union key.  Yes them.  It was probably produced between 1898 and 1906.  Definitely the end of production was before 1920.   The nifty thing is I can hook it to the transceiver I bought this May.  Yep send Morse with a new radio using a hundred year old key.

Nice! And that’s some fine craftsmanship on that thing, too. None of today’s cheap plastic crap.

  3. Beautiful. I just love the crafting and detail of instruments of yore.
