Yet another day and yet another locomotive (YADYAL?) Today is a model of the Central Pacific Jupiter. The Jupiter was a typical American Type 4-4-0 wood burning locomotive. Its major claim to fame was this:
It is the one on the left. It of course was one of the two locomotives at the Golden Spike Ceremony at Promontory Point Utah. The ceremony was to celebrate the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad.
The original Jupiter was built in 1868 and scrapped in 1909. The National Park Service commissioned a replica which began operating in 1979.
